Directions of creative reasoning: reflections on science and literature.
The understanding of Sciences, Arts and Humanities as distant and even opposed areas of knowledge has, still today, an enormous validity. It is, in fact, the reduction of a reality - that of thought - that is much more complex and fascinating; a reduction that neglects, among other things, how the association between these disciplines has played an outstanding role in the production and circulation of knowledge.
The porosity of the borders between science and literature is a good example of this disciplinary symbiosis; the history of the reception of scientific ideas in literature is the proof of it. However, we should also consider the relationship in reverse; that is, how science has investigated the mysteries of the universe and explored its own creative potential through a tool that is usually considered reserved for art only: the imagination.
For a few decades, we have witnessed how historiography, ethnography and other social and human sciences have used the tools of literature to make the products of their research public. Among these, the narrative has become thus an essential epistemological tool, capable of conveying the reflections of this type of sciences. We now ask ourselves, in the first place, about the presence of narrativity in them.
At the same time, we outlined a second objective that seeks to investigate the role that the narrative has in the very constitution of reality, in tune with the hypotheses of cognitive approaches to narrativity, epistemology and, in general, to knowledge and configuration of reality.
Bearing in mind the abovementioned, the objective of this issue of Humanities is to reflect on the scenario of transfers and circulation of knowledge between science and literature, the relationship between the literary imagination and scientific knowledge, and ultimately, about the nature and construction of knowledge itself.
